Toshio Ohi Chozaemon XI
The origin of Ohi Ware dates back to 1666 (Kanbun 6) when Lord Maeda Tsunanori, the fifth lord of the ruling Maeda family, invited the fourth generation Urasenke tea master Sen Soshitsu from Kyoto to Kanazawa to promote Tea ceremony. Master Senso Soshitsu brought along Chozaemon who began to make tea bowls and wares, which led to the foundation of Ohi ware. The tradition has been passed down about 350 years till now.The Ohi Toyasai (Ohi Chozaemon X) who has received numerous honorary prizes, including the Order of Culture and numerous other honorary awards, perpetuates the tradition along with the Toshio Ohi Chozaemon XI. The current generation Ohi Chozaemon leads his artistic career by fusing contemporary art with tradition.
