Terumasa Ikeda
A lacquerware artist, Terumasa Ikeda produces his works through a technique called “Usugai (thin shell) technique,” in which thinly ground pearl shell, etc., is pasted onto lacquered wooden materials like cypress. While, normally, shells are ground to the thinness of 0.2mm, the artist has his further down to about 0.08mm. His arts are in search of the magnificence created by the meticulous accumulation, such as archeological sites and religious buildings where he aims to reflect the uncertainty of the modern time.
