Yamaji Seishijo
Yamatsugi Seishijo, established in 1872 were manufactures for handmade Echizen Washi. At the time of their founding, the company was manufacturing plain Japanese paper such as “Hosho”(traditional, high-quality kozo paper, strong and absorbent). In 1950, Yamatsugi started producing Origami and Wrapper paper using Hikkake technique (The word hikkake means “to catch” and as such, this technique involves a thin metal frame on which the fibers of the mitsumata paper bush or other raw material are caught, creating a design in the paper.) and Sukiawase technique (techniques used to add other materials, to paper, reminiscent of clouds or other designs. The technique is prefecturally designated as an Intangible Cultural Property.) As keeping up close to meet today’s demands, they have also produced modern products such as tea cans, card cases, and can batches, and continue to explore the possibilities of Washi.
